Around a month ago I slipped on some ice and my right arm went through a plate glass window severing my brachial artery, nerves and the biceps tendon. I have been seeing a pt and have been doing minor work to regain the full range of motion of my arm.I was curious what are the best techniques to ease my way back into serious lifting since my entire right arm will be significantly weaker. Any advice you can give me will be great.

  2. OSUDimond,

    Thanks for the question...
Not knowing your case I have to ask:

Are you on any types of restrcitions from your physician in regards to active use of your arm at this time?

Has your PT began to strengthen you yet, or just ROM only?

I do have some suggestions, but I don't wanna jump the gun with you until your body is ready.
Let me know your status in a little more detail and we'll move forward.

If you know anyone else who needs some guidance, pass the word.

Just yesterday I saw my doctor and no longer have to wear a splint, but I can not fully extend my arm at this point because the tendon is still tight. I have just recently started strengthening the bicep doing straight bar curls with a broom stick. I know that I am not healed enough to begin lifting again I am just planning ahead.

When your PT clears you to return to lifting as tolerated, let's talk then. I am avoiding giving you suggestions in case you decide to jump the gun. I just want to see you regress instead of progress.

In regards to your ROM issue...ask your PT, or research your area, for a therapist who uses ETPS! If they are well trained, you will have many benefits from this treatment.

STAY IN TOUCH and let anyone eles you know, to ask for guidance if needed...

  6. Tommybizzle,

Wrist - Are you in a splint for your wrist? Pending on the severity, could be 6-16 weeks. This will be tough when you are trying to pop back up on your board. After the fracture is healed, let's talk about range of motion exercises as your priority...

Elbow dislocation - How long was it out? Who put it back in or did in go back in naturally? These injuries can really range from 4 week to 6 months + depending on the severity.

    Please respond with more details...

Look fwd to gettin your back in the water...

    Hey sorry for the delay..
Wrist- no cast since i was told i need to keep my elbow mobile so it doesnt "lock up" (sounds uncomfortable). The doctor said my it happened because the ligament stretched as tight as fishing line and "sliced" part of my wrist bone off..
Elbow- Still cant bend or extend after almost 2 weeks, mobility is between say, 60 and 150 degrees (normal being 30 to 180) it was popped out for about 5 minutes til i performed a little self diagnosis while the birds were flying around my head still.. i just gritted my teeth and forced it back into place. it still feels like theres "stuff" in the way keeping my elbow joint from extending.

i would also like to discuss physical therapy/training sessions with you but not over the forum..
Thanks so much for your help !

  8. T bizzle,

Why would a wrist cast hinder elbow movement?
Do you have access to a therapist? You need some good hands on care to get your ROM back to normal. You need a therapist who is going to work your soft tissue, joint capsules, and just stretch you out!

What did you mean by this, "i would also like to discuss physical therapy/training sessions with you but not over the forum..."

I am available for hire, if that is what you are referring to?

    Thanks for the follow up,
    J

thats exactly what im referring to, gotta talk to the parents about the uh.. financial aspect of it. but i want to both get my arm back working and be able to surf better.

oh and i have no clue what they were thinking with the cast.. seems like your on the right track with a therapist tho because when i try to stretch the joint im not sure if its good pain or bad pain or if im causing more damage or.. you know
