  2. Thanks for the question...

    Here is my schpeel (spelling?):
Stretching before a session (I do it), will not lead to any gains in muscle length. If you go too hard, can cause some injury. You stretch before a session just to loosen the muscles. They are often in a shorter position than you need them to be in before surfing.
Stretching after a session, when you are WARMED up, is when and where you can make gains in muscle length. The muscle is now warm with blood, and it is safer to push on it.
How long do you hold a stretch for? I REC 3 sets for as many seconds as you are old per muscle/muscle group. This is a JOSHISM that is based on some current reserach in the literature.

Basic morning stetch routine: Healthy if you don't go TOO hard. Just be cautious in the morning as you dnot want to damage anything. When stretching "cold" like this, you not only are stretching muscles, but nerves! Just take it easy and you should be okay.

Surfing stretch guidelines: HIPS< HIPS< HIPS!!!!!
Keep those hips loose! Stretch after each session, even if you feel like dork! I do, and I do it! :) If you need specific stretches let me know...? Also, stretch the soleus muscle in your calves!

Let me know if you have other questions and how else I can help!

Spread the word on the site if you know someone dealing with something...

    Thanks,
    ~J
