Help Lower Back pain from Surfing and other stuff.

    I'm an HMO and desperate for some quality care! :''''(

    I've been surfing for 10 years and recently I've developed chronic lower back pain. Its generalized on the right side. It hurts when I bend over. It really started to flair up when I played indoor soccer for 2 months. Previously I think I pulled it when I did yoga. I sat out for 3 weeks and went back to surfing. Now the pain won't go away!

    My doc has me doing a series of leg hamstring stretches. Hip bridging. and stomach strengthening. I also wear a back pillow every where and I get up and move around. I work on a computer and have bad posture.

    OH please help. I don't want to be a cripple!!

  2. Does it only hurt when you bend over?
    Is it worse sitting, or standing?
    Do you kick soccer lefty or righty?

    In addition to tight legs, you probably have a misalignment issue that is leading to this "chronic" condition. You woul want to be evaluated by a physical therapist who incorporates Manual Therapy techniques into their practice to properly evaluate you and provide you with specific mobilizations, stretches, and exercises unique to your sypmtoms. Don't just follow a blanket advice from someone.

    Hello there: I'm in agreement with Joshua Passmore. A thorough evaluation by a PT with an interest / specialty in manual therapy would be ideal for you. Being a surfer for as long as you have been one, your back has endured a lot of positional extension (or backward bending) isolated to your low back (preparing to mount a wave, executing a pop up on the board, etc...). Having been accustomed to this extension, forward bending can be quite uncomfortable (at first). Your UPPER back may also be limited with respect to this extension, which will also place more stress on the low back or lumbar spine. Until you have been evaluated by a therapist, I would avoid doing bridges as you mentioned earlier. Sounds like something very treatable but you need to be seen by a PT so he/she can gain a thorough history and rule out other causes. Hope this helps.
