weak and painful shoulders

I have had stiffness and lack of flexibility in both my shoulders for circa 2 1/2 weeks (have rested them). Some rotational issues and stiffness but pain and weakness if I try and lift anything above my head.

The pain seems to start when the upper arms / biceps pass the horizontal and you push onto the vertical (both shoulder joint feel weak), they also do not feel strong when doing press ups and I have slight pain if I try to push my shoulders back (opening my chest) when my arms are extended

I think the shoulders where injured when I was doing very deep squats with my arms behind me and hands resting on a swiss ball, the class instructor then got us to push up using our arms on the ball rather than legs and my shoulders have been in pain since ( three sets of 90 second reps). It does not appear to be rotor cuff as I can still do rotor cuff exercises with no pain, although I probably only have about 90% of the flexibility I had a month ago.

I have rested the shoulders but it has not improved, is it time to consult a physio or sports doctor? Or are them some soft exercise I can use to improve the flexibity and strength

  2. Instinct tells me you are dealing with an issue that could benefit a true thourough personal evaluation.
Possibilities: Sub-acromial bursitis, RTC impingment, and a few others.

Have you tried applying ice to them for 15 minutes 5 times a day to see if the pain goes away?

Let me know if I can help in any other way and keep me in the loop as to what you find out.

    Thanks for the question,

After a full assesment it looks like it is Sub-acromial bursitis and luckily no muscle damage - on ice and some stablisation and strengthening exercises - The physio reckons my joints in general are very flexible and also has given some exercises to increase the stablity of my hips which should solve another niggling problem I have when I run so well worth the visit
